Isla Holbox – the Graffiti Island

Streetart has a new home: far from the graffiti hubs of London, New York and Berlin, lies the tiny Caribbean island Holbox.

Judith and Sergio were just looking for a relaxing place to spend their holidays – which is how they arrived on Isla Holbox. The gorgeous sandy island is located in the northern part of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and considered an insider tip among world travelers.

But apart from finding themselves amidst beautiful beaches and a dazzling tropical atmosphere, Judith and Sergio discovered many of the island’s walls were covered with beautiful art! The images they depict allude to the stories and culture of the island, many showing the local fishermen at work.

Few expect these gorgeous murals of Holbox, tucked away at the center of a paradisiacal nature sanctuary and surrounded by while sandy beaches. Mexico’s first International Public Art Festival "IPAF" is the reason the island is covered with art: Created by the CRAD association (Cancun & Riviera Maya Arts Destination), IPAF aims to foster artistic activities that reflect the identity of local society. It brought national and international artists to the island for the first time in February 2014, mostly from Mexico and Canada.
