Open source security for mobile devices
Anyone looking for encryption tools to increase privacy should take a good look at two products from the Open Whisper Systems. RedPhone allows for encrypted telephone conversations based on voice-over IP. The tool uses a smartphone’s data channel, so it is not billed as a regular phone call. You don’t need a new phone, just download the program and you’re ready to go.
TextSecure is an excellent choice for anyone looking to chat and send text messages more securely. Edward Snowden recommended both products, by the way, which is sure to please developer Moxie Marlinspike. According to test reports, a bug or two still need some work. But as with most open-source products, we can hope that these minor glitches are soon ironed out.
